Kodiaks men’s basketball team adds front court presence
Kodiaks men’s basketball team has added size and versatility to its frontcourt with the commitment of forward Van Kerrison for the upcoming season.
The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks men's basketball team has added size and versatility to its frontcourt with the commitment of forward Van Kerrison for the upcoming season.
A graduate of Foothills Composite High School in Okotoks, Alta., Kerrison joins the Kodiaks after competing with Foundations Youth Basketball and will reunite with former teammate Nash Byam as part of the Kodiaks 2026 recruiting class. He will begin his post-secondary studies in the General Arts and Science program this fall.
Kerrison first connected with the Kodiaks coaching staff at the Raymond Sugar Bowl in 2023 and remained in contact with the program throughout his gap year.
"I saw a quality program with a great culture, and a chance to play for Coach Heggie was something I could not pass up," says Kerrison.
Kodiaks Head Coach Ryan Heggie believes that Kerrison is somewhat of a "throwback post" as he can score with his back to the basket, but he also has the versatility of a modern power forward. Heggie has seen that versatility through Kerrison's mid-range shots, drives to the hoop and the occasional three-pointer.
"With his long reach and strong rebounding ability, Van can control the glass and start the fast break well," says Heggie. "He also has great post footwork and a reputation for being a great teammate."
The opportunity to remain close to home and compete in Alberta also played a role in his commitment.
"To play in the ACAC is an opportunity to stay in my home province and play in front of family and friends," says Kerrison. "I'm looking forward to playing the sport I love and the camaraderie that comes from being part of a team."
Kerrison enjoyed a standout senior season in2024 at Foothills Composite, setting school records with 673 points, 388 rebounds, 38 blocks and a 309 plus-minus rating over 34 games while shooting 59 per cent from the field.
Heggie believes Kerrison's background in a strong basketball program has prepared him well for the next level.
"Coming from a quality Foothills program, Van already understands hard work and team basketball," he says. "We expect him to come into camp ready to compete every day. Having an impactful post presence is extremely important to our success."
Kerrison thanks his parents, coaches and teammates for supporting his development throughout his basketball journey, while also crediting his faith for helping guide him to this opportunity.
