Sofia Janzen (third year, Agricultural Sciences, Carseland, Alta.) turned in a resilient and hard-fought weekend performance as the Kodiaks battled the nationally ranked Red Deer Polytechnic Queens in a pair of tightly contested matches. In Friday’s four-set showdown, Janzen made her presence felt on both sides of the ball, recording two kills on an efficient .333 hitting percentage while adding an assist, a service ace, three digs, and three blocks for six total points. Her work at the net and ability to contribute in multiple facets helped the Kodiaks push the pace and challenge one of the top teams in the country. She followed up with another strong outing in Saturday’s straight-sets match, leading the offence with five kills on a .308 clip and adding two digs, consistently providing a reliable scoring option in extended rallies. Despite the results, Janzen’s steady play, competitiveness, and ability to rise to the level of elite opposition earned her ACAC Player of the Game Match in both matches.
Malcolm Fisher (fifth year, Open Studies, Lethbridge) anchored the Kodiaks’ defence in a statement weekend against the nationally ranked No. 5 Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, as No. 15 Lethbridge pushed one of the country’s top teams to the limit. In Friday’s thrilling five-set loss, Fisher was outstanding in the backcourt, leading both teams with 14 digs while adding an assist and delivering steady serve receive under constant pressure. His composure and defensive consistency allowed the Kodiaks to extend rallies and compete point-for-point in a tightly contested battle, earning him ACAC Player of the Match honours. The Kodiaks responded in dominate fashion the following afternoon, turning the tide with a dominant straight-sets, 3–0 victory to split the weekend series. Fisher’s veteran leadership and defensive presence set the tone for this team as they head into ACAC Championships this weekend.
