WBB Championship Bracket Finalized
Feb. 27, 2017 – It came down to the final weekend, but the field for the upcoming RE/MAX 2017 ACAC Women’s Basketball Championships, which will be hosted by Lethbridge College at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium from March 2-4, has now been finalized.
With four teams still in contention for the final two playoff berths, including the fourth and final seeds in both the north and south divisions, Friday night was full of scoreboard watching around the league.
In the north, the Lakeland College Rustlers clinched their playoff berth by virtue of the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings losing 68-47 to the NAIT Ooks on Friday. The Vikings needed to knock off the division leading Ooks twice in a row to tie the Rustlers in the standings, which would have forced a rare tie-breaking scenario. The Rustlers and Vikings had split a four-game regular season series.
Lakeland joins NAIT, Concordia University of Edmonton and Keyano College as the north division representatives at the tournament. The Rustlers will draw the south's top seeded Lethbridge College Kodiaks in the feature 8 p.m. game Thursday night, The matchup will be a rematch of last year’s ACAC bronze medal game, where the Kodiaks defeated Lakeland 90-61 on the Rustler's home court.
Down south, the Medicine Hat College Rattlers needed a single victory against last-place Ambrose to overtake Red Deer College and punch their own ticket to the conference tournament. They accomplished that feat Friday with a convincing 91-53 win, meaning they will be tasked with knocking off the north’s top seeded NAIT Ooks in the conference tournament's opening round.
The Rattlers will be joined by Lethbridge College, St. Mary’s University and SAIT as the south division representatives in the tournament. In other first round tournament matchups, SAIT will battle Concordia while Keyano College will try to knock off the St. Mary’s Lightning.
