Ranked 1st in Canada, Kodiaks return to home court this weekend

Jan. 13, 2016 – Fresh off a long semester break the Lethbridge College Kodiaks basketball teams return to action this weekend. The Kodiaks women (9-0) are not only in first place in the ACAC, but they also hold down the top spot in the national CCAA rankings – a placing they have held since mid-November.

The women’s team begins the semester with a marquee match-up, taking on the second place St. Mary’s Lightning (9-1) in a home and home series. The Lightning’s only loss this season came at the hands of the Kodiaks. The Kodiaks men (5-4) look to rebound after back-to-back losses to end the first semester. They have a golden opportunity as they face the Lightning (3-7) in a home-and-home series. The men’s and women’s teams visit St. Mary’s Friday. Saturday, the Kodiaks return to the Val Matteotti Gym. The women tip off at 6 p.m., the men follow at 8 p.m.

The Kodiaks volleyball teams charge back onto their home court this weekend. The Kodiaks men’s team (8-6) is coming off a sweep over Olds College to open the second semester. The wins bumped them into a tie for third place in the ACAC south division. The Kodiaks women lost two straight to the higher ranked Broncos in Olds last weekend, but picked up momentum with a hard-fought five set loss Saturday. The Kodiaks are back at home for the first time since November, hosting Ambrose College in the front half of a home-and-home weekend series on Friday night at the Val Matteotti Gym. The women’s game begins at 6 p.m., the men follow at 8:00 p.m. The Kodiaks travel to Calgary to visit Ambrose Saturday.

For both volleyball and basketball home games on Friday and Saturday, the Kodiaks will take part in Make Some Noise for Mental Health Night. Those in attendance can enter to win multiple prizes, including gift baskets courtesy of the Canadian Mental Health Association and Lethbridge College fitness centre memberships.

Also, this weekend, the Kodiaks indoor track teams look for a lightning-quick start to the new season, hosting the first event of the ACAC campaign. It’s the first time the Kodiaks have ever hosted a major indoor event. The meet starts at 1 p.m. Saturday at the University of Lethbridge’s First Choice Savings Centre track. The men are the two-time defending ACAC champions, and both the men and women hope to build off very successful cross-country seasons in the fall.

Tickets are free for students with a valid student ID, $4 for children and youth and $6 for all others. For more information, check out gokodiaks.ca.
