Pires, West named Kodiaks athletes of the month for January

One comes from Raymond, the other from Brazil, but Sunder West and Andre Pires have one thing in common – both have been named Lethbridge College Kodiaks athletes of the month for January.

Pires is a second year libero for the men’s volleyball team. Hailing from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, the business administration student was a key part of the Kodiaks blistering 6-2 start to the second half of the season, moving them into second place in the ACAC south division. Pires had an incredible month of January, recording 100 digs in eight matches, an average of 3.22 digs per set. That raised his season average to 2.7 digs per set, third best in the ACAC south division.

"Andre has played a big role in the success we have had in the second semester, with timely digs and his passion in the back row,” says men’s volleyball coach Mike Hawkins. “We will be leaning on him as we continue our push towards a berth in the ACAC championships at the end of February and hopefully on to nationals."

West, a second year general studies student, won an Alberta 4A girls provincial high school championship during her final season with Raymond High School. Her winning attitude has now helped the Kodiaks women’s basketball team to a perfect season so far, and the top ranking in Canada. Helping the Kodiaks go 4-0 in January, West averaged 11.25 points per game. At the end of the month she sat first in the ACAC south division in assists per game with 5.62, second in steals per game with 4.23 and third in scoring average with 15.54 points per game.

“Sunder has been playing great,” says women’s basketball coach Brad Karren. “She is an outstanding athlete and makes everyone around her better.  Along with being one of our leading scorers, she leads our team in steals and assists and has been one of the main reasons we are undefeated to this point in the season.”

West and her Kodiaks teammates return to the court this weekend, visiting Briercrest College Friday and Saturday. Pires and his men’s volleyball team wrap up their regular season at home Friday and Saturday, also against Briercrest.
