CHARLOTTETOWN - The Nomades de Montmorency withstood a VALIANT comeback attempt from the Lethbridge Kodiaks to win 86-84 in the opening round of the CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship.
CCAA All-Canadian Kevin Civil led Montmorency with 25 points and four assists to take home Player of the Game honours for the Nomades, while Robert Myles III got the nod for Lethbridge with 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
The Nomades got off to a hot start in the first quarter, taking an 11-4 lead early. The Kodiaks shook off their shaky start and closed the gap, but the Nomades still took a 17-15 lead going into the second.
The second quarter was back and forth, with both teams locked in on defense.
Lethbridge, who had never led in the game, battled back to take a 39-33 lead going into halftime.
The second half started slowly for both teams, with each team taking time to find its offensive rhythm.
The Nomades built up a lead late in the third quarter, but a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Myles III tied the game at 55-55.
In the final frame, both teams traded baskets, but it was the Nomades who were able to build a double-digit lead late.
Lethbridge battled back with big plays from Chris Maughan and Pierce van Gaalen, but it was too little, too late.
Montmorency will advance to tomorrow’s semi-final at 6 p.m., where they will take on the VIU Mariners. For Lethbridge, they will take on the George Brown Huskies in a bronze quarterfinal matchup at 1 p.m.
