Hirata, Maughan named athletes of the week
Feb. 09, 2017 – Following a strong weekend showing for both basketball and volleyball programs, the Kodiaks have announced Reina Hirata and Chris Maughan as the Kodiaks Athletes of the Week for Jan. 30 to Feb. 5!
Reina Hirata, Women’s Volleyball
Reina, a second-year Practical Nursing student athlete, put together two of her strongest matches for the Kodiaks up against the ACAC leading Red Deer Queens last weekend. In Friday’s contest, Reina passed an outstanding 2.44/3 as well as picking up four assists and digs. She followed that up with a 2.47/3 passing with two assists and eight digs against a very strong hitting Queens squad on Saturday. Reina will look to continue her strong play against Ambrose in a home-and-home series this weekend.
Chris Maughan, Men’s Basketball
Chris, a fourth-year business management student athlete, helped the Kodiaks earn a sweep of the Broncos by pouring in 49 points, collecting 20 rebounds and adding three steals in two games last weekend. The wins keeps the Kodiaks tied for first place in the tough ACAC south, and sets up a crucial home-and-home first place showdown with the third ranked Medicine Hat Rattlers this weekend.
Make some noise for mental health weekend
Both volleyball and basketball are preparing for crucial home-and-home series this weekend. Basketball will host Medicine Hat at the Val Matteotti Gym on Friday, while Volleyball will return home Saturday night to face off against the visiting Ambrose Lions.
It’s also the Kodiaks promotional “Make some noise for mental health” weekend, part of a province-wide mental health awareness campaign. The Kodiaks are partnering with the Lethbridge College Students' Association to giveaway Flames tickets, gift baskets and a tablet, so fans are encouraged to come out both nights and make some noise for the Kodiaks!
