CCAA announces opening round matchups for MBB/WBB Nationals

March 7, 2017 – The opening round matchups are set and the countdown is now on.

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) announced the seeding for the upcoming men’s and women’s national basketball championship tournaments this morning. Both Lethbridge College basketball programs were paying close attention to who their first-round opponents would be.

The Kodiaks are sending both teams to nationals after the Kodiaks women won the ACAC title on their home court last weekend, while the Kodiaks men secured the ACAC wildcard bid by knocking off the nationally second-ranked Medicine Hat Rattlers in the semifinal of last weekend’s ACAC men’s basketball championship tournament.

The Kodiaks women drew the tournament’s third seed and will open against PACWEST champion Douglas College in the opening round, which starts Thursday, March 16 in Edmonton, hosted by NAIT. It’s a curious drop for the undefeated Kodiaks, who entered the ACAC championship tournament ranked number two in the CCAA. Lethbridge and Douglas will kick off the first game of the tournament at 1 p.m. MST.

Douglas College, located in New Westminster, British Columbia, finished second in the PACWEST during the regular season and managed to get hot in the playoffs, knocking off the Capilano Blues in the PACWEST final to secure their first conference championship since 1993.

Meanwhile, the Kodiaks men drew the seventh seed and will face RSEQ champion Nomades de Montmorency in the opening round of their tournament in Charlottetown, P.E.I., hosted by Holland College. The Nomades are a perennial power from Laval, Quebec and will present a stiff first-round challenge for the Kodiaks.

Montmorency entered the RSEQ playoffs as the number three seed in the CCAA and rolled their way to a conference championship, defeating the Vanier College Cheetahs 85-71 in the final. The teams will square off at 3 p.m. AST (noon MST) game when the tournament opens on Thursday, March 16.
